ROBWARE » Blog » Hilarious Phone Call

Post created on Friday the 19th of August 2011

I just had to post about this, because it's probably the best phone call I'll have in a long time.

Last night, what I was eating dinner, the phone rang from an out of area phone number. I answered it and an Indian sounding man was on the other end. He claimed to be from Microsoft and was asking for my father. Here's a basic transcript:

Me: "Hello?"

Caller: "Hello, is this Mr Marshall?"

Me: "Which Mr Marshall?" (There are a potential of 3)

Caller: "Mr Marshall"

Me: "I may or may not be, depending on what this is regarding" (It's a bit of a givaway that a scam is going down when an Indian sounding man from an out of area number is on the phone)

Caller: "Are you Mr Marshall?"

Me: "I may or may not be, depending on what this is regarding"

Caller: "Well I'm from Microsoft and I'm calling about something with found when you submitted an error report (describes what you see when you get an error report). We have found that there have been a few errors with your system and it may be at risk. Are you infront of your computer?"

Me (still eating): "Yes, I'm just working on some documents"

Caller: "Do you see a popup at all?"

Me: "I have done, but I've just ignored them because I'm busy working on my documents"

Caller: "Do you see it now?"

Me: "Oh, yes there it is again"

Caller: "Ok, do you seen a green button with 'Start' on it at the bottom right of your screen?" (Targetting XP, wow...)

Me: "Yes"

Caller: "Right click on that for me and tell me what you see"

Now, at this point I'm thinking "Crap, I can't remember what you get from that in XP", but I try and wing it anyway.

Me: "Properties, Explore, and a few other things"

Caller: "Can you click Explore for me please?"

Now, by this time I can't remember what'll happen next, so I have to end it

Me: "Sorry, this is far too hilarious. I can't keep this going anymore, phish someone else."

I then laugh at him and put the phone down. And this is where it get's worth posting about; he rings back.

Me: "Hello?"

Caller: "You lied to me!" (continues to rant about how I lied to him)

Me (while he's ranting): "You do realise what you're doing in this country is considered fraud and is illegal? It may not be in your country, but it is here. Now leave us in peace"

At which point I put the phone down for a second time.

And then he rings back for another go. At which point I answer.

Me: "What part of fuck off don't you understand?"

And then I, for the third time, put the phone down.

And that's the end of that story, folks. Scammers are good fun! :D
